Why I Chose to Start my Independent Practice

After more than 20 years working in Manitoba’s mental health system—supporting individuals and families through crisis, rehabilitation, and recovery—I made the decision to step into independent practice. It wasn’t a decision I made lightly. It was the result of deep reflection, a shifting season in my life, and a desire to offer care in a different way.

I’ve been privileged to work alongside dedicated professionals—nurses, therapists, support workers, and program leaders—who show up every day with compassion and skill, even when the demands are high and the needs are complex. I carry deep respect for the work they continue to do in a system that, while essential, is often stretched beyond capacity.

Over the years, I’ve seen that healing is not something that happens in one setting alone. It’s not only clinical. It’s not only structural. Sometimes, what a person needs is space—space to reflect, to ask questions, to explore what recovery means in the context of their life.

That’s where independent practice comes in.

For me, this work is about offering a different kind of support:

  • Time to have the conversations that don’t always fit into standard appointments

  • Guidance for those navigating a complex system or seeking clarity on their options

  • A place to be heard, without judgment or pressure, from someone who understands both the system and the personal journey

In stepping away from leadership, I haven’t stepped away from the work I believe in. I’ve simply shifted how I do it. I now offer virtual psychiatric nursing consultations across Manitoba—conversations rooted in clinical expertise, compassion, and the belief that healing is possible in many forms.

If you’re exploring your next step or unsure where to begin, you’re not alone. Whether you’re looking for support alongside your current care, or seeking a place to start your journey, I invite you to connect.
